What Is Fire of the Rising Moons?
Fire of the Rising Moons is a nighttime experience in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park.
Instead of watching Disneyland’s fireworks from the traditional viewing areas around Sleeping Beauty Castle or Main Street, U.S.A., guests gather in Black Spire Outpost and watch the fireworks burst into the sky beyond the rocky spires of Batuu.
But this isn’t simply another place to stand and watch the same show.
Disney has created a Star Wars story around the experience, complete with its own musical accompaniment and a celebration that fits into the world of Batuu. Selections from composer John Williams’ famous Star Wars film scores accompany the fireworks overhead.
The result is a nighttime experience that can feel very different from watching fireworks elsewhere in Disneyland Park.
A Celebration from a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Like much of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Fire of the Rising Moons has an in-universe story behind it.
Within the world of Batuu, villagers and visitors gather together to celebrate freedom while honoring the heroes and legends who came before them.
The celebration is introduced by Tohan Lege, a storyteller known as the Lore-weaver.
According to the story, Tohan made Black Spire his home after being pursued by those who wanted to silence him. He recorded stories about the colorful history of Black Spire and its people with the help of an old astromech droid he named Bard.
That backstory helps transform what could simply be an alternate fireworks viewing location into something that feels more connected to Galaxy’s Edge.
Is This a Separate Disneyland Fireworks Show?
This is probably the most important thing to understand before planning your evening.
Fire of the Rising Moons provides a different perspective on the Disneyland Park fireworks rather than replacing them with an entirely separate fireworks display.
You’re watching the fireworks illuminate the sky from inside Galaxy’s Edge while Star Wars music and the surrounding environment create a different experience.
That distinction matters because the fireworks were primarily designed to be viewed from Disneyland’s traditional viewing locations. Depending on the current nighttime spectacular, certain projections, effects or other show elements visible elsewhere in the park may not be visible from Batuu.
What you gain instead is atmosphere.
Seeing fireworks explode beyond the jagged rock formations and futuristic architecture of Black Spire Outpost while John Williams’ music plays around you can make the display feel surprisingly at home in the Star Wars universe.
Where Can You Watch Fire of the Rising Moons?
Disney currently identifies several viewing areas throughout Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
- Black Spire Spaceport near Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
- TIE Echelon docking platform near Black Spire Surplus
- Speeder garage near Droid Depot
These locations provide different perspectives on the fireworks and the surrounding landscape of Batuu.
Rather than automatically heading to one location because someone online called it the “best” spot years ago, ask a Cast Member about current viewing arrangements when you visit. Entertainment operations and crowd management can change.
How Long Is Fire of the Rising Moons?
Disney currently lists the experience at approximately 13 minutes.
You’ll want to allow more time than that if seeing it is important to you. Give yourself time to reach Galaxy’s Edge, find an appropriate viewing location and get situated before the fireworks begin.
Fire of the Rising Moons is presented on select nights rather than every night of the year.
Check the Disneyland app or the official entertainment schedule on the day of your visit for the current performance time.
Why Galaxy’s Edge Feels So Different After Dark
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is worth experiencing during both daylight and nighttime because the atmosphere changes considerably after sunset.
As daylight disappears, lighting throughout Black Spire Outpost draws attention to details that are easy to overlook during the day. The Millennium Falcon, spacecraft, weathered buildings and towering rock formations take on a different appearance.
Fire of the Rising Moons takes advantage of that nighttime environment.
Instead of a castle framing the fireworks, you have the spires of Batuu. Instead of traditional Disney music accompanying the experience, you hear themes associated with the Star Wars universe.
For serious Star Wars fans, that atmosphere may be more important than having the conventional Disneyland fireworks view.
John Williams’ Music Is a Big Part of the Experience
Imagine a Star Wars experience without the music and something immediately feels missing.
That’s particularly true here.
Fire of the Rising Moons incorporates selections from John Williams’ Star Wars film scores as the fireworks illuminate the sky above Black Spire Outpost.
The music helps connect the real fireworks happening elsewhere in Disneyland with the fictional celebration taking place on Batuu.
It’s also one of the reasons this experience is more than simply discovering that you can see Disneyland’s fireworks from Galaxy’s Edge.
MagicBand+ Adds Another Layer
Guests wearing a MagicBand+ can experience an additional interactive element during Fire of the Rising Moons.
Disney says MagicBand+ devices can respond to the ceremony with colorful lights and ambient vibrations.
You don’t need a MagicBand+ to watch or enjoy the experience. The fireworks, music and Batuu setting are the main attraction.
But if you’re already using one during your Disneyland visit, you may notice it reacting as the nighttime celebration unfolds.
Should You Watch Here or at Sleeping Beauty Castle?
There isn’t one viewing location that’s right for everyone because the experiences are different.
If this is your first Disneyland visit and seeing the complete presentation of the park’s current fireworks spectacular is important to you, one of Disney’s traditional fireworks viewing areas may make more sense.
Disney recommends locations including the area in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, Main Street, U.S.A., the area near “it’s a small world” and the Rivers of America for its fireworks spectaculars.
But if you’re a Star Wars fan, have already experienced Disneyland fireworks from the traditional locations or simply want a different kind of nighttime atmosphere, Fire of the Rising Moons offers something those locations cannot.
There aren’t many places where you can watch Disney fireworks explode beyond the spires of an alien planet while the music of Star Wars fills the air.
Pair It with an Evening in Galaxy’s Edge
Rather than visiting Galaxy’s Edge only for the fireworks, consider making Fire of the Rising Moons the conclusion to a larger evening on Batuu.
You could explore Black Spire Outpost after dark, ride Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and then find a viewing location before Fire of the Rising Moons begins.
Disneyland also offers other nighttime entertainment in Galaxy’s Edge, so check the current entertainment schedule when planning your visit.
Building your evening around what’s actually operating that day is much more reliable than following an itinerary written around a previous year’s entertainment schedule.
What Happens if the Fireworks Are Canceled?
Southern California may be known for pleasant weather, but Disneyland fireworks are still subject to weather conditions.
Disney specifically notes that fireworks can be changed or canceled.
Wind can be particularly important because Disneyland is surrounded by the city of Anaheim, requiring the park to operate its pyrotechnics under appropriate conditions.
If Fire of the Rising Moons is a priority, check the Disneyland app as your planned showtime approaches for the latest entertainment information.
Tips for Seeing Fire of the Rising Moons
- Check the schedule on the day of your visit. The experience is offered on select nights, and performance schedules can change.
- Remember that this is a different perspective on Disneyland’s fireworks. You may not see every element available from traditional viewing locations.
- Ask about current viewing areas. Disney currently lists locations near Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Black Spire Surplus and Droid Depot.
- Give yourself time to get situated. Don’t wait until the fireworks are starting to begin searching for a viewing spot.
- Explore Batuu after dark. Galaxy’s Edge takes on a different atmosphere at night, making it worth arriving before the show.
- Bring your MagicBand+ if you use one. Compatible bands can respond to the experience with lights and vibrations.
- Have a backup plan. Fireworks are weather dependent and can be canceled.
Is Fire of the Rising Moons Worth Seeing?
For Star Wars fans, Fire of the Rising Moons offers one of Disneyland’s most distinctive ways to end the evening.
It isn’t about having the traditional castle view. It’s about watching the sky light up from inside the world of Star Wars.
The combination of fireworks, John Williams’ music and the silhouettes of Batuu’s towering spires creates an experience that feels very different from standing on Main Street, U.S.A.
Visitors who want the most complete presentation of Disneyland’s primary fireworks spectacular may prefer a traditional viewing area. Visitors who care more about Star Wars atmosphere may find that Galaxy’s Edge is exactly where they want to be.
Ending Your Disneyland Night Near Best Western Plus Anaheim Inn
One advantage of staying close to Disneyland becomes especially apparent after the nighttime entertainment ends.
Best Western Plus Anaheim Inn is located directly across Harbor Boulevard from the Disneyland Resort pedestrian entrance, giving guests a convenient home base for days and nights spent exploring the parks.
That can be particularly welcome after spending the evening deep inside Disneyland Park watching fireworks from a galaxy far, far away.
Whether you choose the classic castle view or celebrate among the spires of Batuu, Fire of the Rising Moons gives Star Wars fans another reason to stick around after sunset and see Disneyland Park in an entirely different light.
