The San Diego Zoo gets a lot of hype, but don’t overlook the nearby LA Zoo where special events, four-legged (and more!) residents are available to visit, and gorgeous landscaping make for an idyllic getaway. You can schedule a birthday party or other private event. Don’t miss out on the tail end of LA Zoo Lights January 1 – 8, and take in the last of the holiday festivities from 6 – 10 p.m.
The Reindeer Romp also happens until January 8 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with real reindeer available for viewing. These temporary guests are a favorite of little ones, and since the holidays are over, they’re well-rested and ready for photo opportunities. You can also visit the LAIR (living amphibians, invertebrates and reptiles) to check out the unique habitats of endangered and rare species—it’s one of the rarest collections in North America.
Plan Your Visit
Stroll through the botanical gardens and discover native and imported plants. With over 5,400 mammals on earth, you’ll be surprised at how many are represented here! Visit the giant anteater, the aptly named bat-eared fox, giraffes, tigers, zebras and more.
Educational programs are available for all ages, including adults. The zoo’s overnight camp lets you camp with the creatures, and family classes let you get closer to the animals and learn more about conservation efforts. Where will your zoo-venture begin?
